Possible volcanic activity after 5 January at Southern Kermadec Islands. NZ volcanoes quiet. Summary. This forecast worked out well. The 6.48am, 6 January Wilberforce Valley rumble in the Southern Alps got a few people on the West Coast out of bed before the alarm clocks went off. "It''s been a crazy day," a woman from Hokitika said later on. "Not as big as the the 1995 quake," one old timer from Arthurs Pass declared. The Kermadecs, Wilberforce Valley, Snares Islands all went off but none at Mag 6. The forecast period began slowly with little action but a huge windup and late release. This is the biggest push seen since this Service began on 6 August, 2012. More action seems inevitiable. Volcanoes remain huge. Eruptions on Shiveluch, Japan (2), Hunga Ha'apai, Bardarbunga. 6 January. Wilberforce Valley 6.0 (5.6 USGS, EMSC, GEOFON); Snares Islands 5.3, south of Kermadecs 4.8
