The NZ Seismological Observatory, Geonet, have confirmed volcanic heating of the crater lake at Ruapehu, beginning early Dec. Temperatures have peaked at 40C... just right for an acid swim in the lake. This Service has observed and forecasted major volcanic and quake activity in Tonga and the Kermadecs through late Dec early Jan. An undersea minor eruption in the southern Kermadecs 14-15 Jan was likely but due to the size of the eruption, the depth of the water, bad weather at the time, no visual confirmation was ever made. Volcano monitoring services are continuing to report major ongoing global activity. More eruptions are likely near the end of or soon after the next quake forecast period.
