Forecast for 23 June 2014

Quake activity may increase. Magnitude 4+ risk areas are Fiordland, East Cape, Bay of Plenty. Forecast confidence = low. Summary. 23 June. South of Kermadecs 4.9, East Cape 3.9 24 June. Kermadecs 6.9, 6.3, 6.2 (USGS) Aleutian Islands 7.9, north of Coromandel 4.1, East Cape 4.1, 3.9 The two big global quakes today were on their way from 19 June. This was always going to be a global hit. Limited and variable data on these types of driving conditions makes for difficult forecasting so maybe this forecast was a combination of good management, intuition and luck. Conditions are now quiet again and apart from the occasional aftershock down the North Island East Coast should hopefully remain quiet until the next active period on 27 June (approx). Volcano monitoring services report that the eruption on Piton de la Fournaise is over. Sangeang Api, Kilauea are active. Todays shock tends not to drive volcanic activity. Thanks.
